The Melanin Village App

A mobile community platform to strengthen connection, access, and community for Black and Brown homeschool families

Designed as a scalable mobile MVP, this platform unifies curriculum access, community engagement, and administrative workflows into one cohesive ecosystem. By replacing fragmented tools with an intuitive, integrated experience, the app creates operational clarity for administrators while offering homeschooling families a seamless and centralized digital hub.

The Challenge

The Melanin Village had grown into a vibrant and active homeschooling community. However, its digital infrastructure had not evolved at the same pace. Families and administrators relied on multiple disconnected platforms to manage curriculum, communication, and events, creating operational friction and an inconsistent user experience.

As the community expanded, several emerging needs became clear:

  • Unified Infrastructure - A centralized platform that integrates curriculum, communication, and community engagement into one cohesive system.

  • Operational Efficiency - Streamlined workflows that reduce administrative friction and support sustainable growth.

  • Consistent Experience - Clear and intuitive navigation patterns that seamlessly connect learning and community interactions.

  • Scalable Growth - A flexible foundation designed to evolve alongside the expanding homeschooling network.

The challenge was not simply to design a mobile app, but to rethink how community engagement, learning access, and administrative workflows could function cohesively within one ecosystem.

The Solution

To address these emerging needs, we designed a mobile MVP that unifies curriculum access, communication tools, and community engagement within one cohesive platform. Instead of layering new features onto fragmented systems, we focused on creating an integrated ecosystem that simplifies interaction for families while strengthening operational efficiency for administrators.

The solution was anchored in three core pillars:

  • Community Connection - A dynamic social feed, direct messaging, and group spaces that foster connection and meaningful interaction.

  • Integrated Learning Experience - Seamless access to curriculum resources within the same platform, eliminating the need to switch between tools.

  • Operational Simplicity - Clear workflows and structured navigation that support event management, communication, and content organization.

By aligning user experience with operational structure, the platform establishes a scalable foundation designed to grow alongside the community.

Platform Strategy

As the project scope evolved, it became clear that the technical foundation would directly impact both short term execution and future scalability. Rather than designing in isolation, we evaluated platform options through a strategic lens, ensuring alignment with organizational goals while prioritizing three key criteria:

  • Scalability - A framework capable of supporting future feature expansion and growing user engagement.

  • System Integration - The ability to unify curriculum access, social interaction, and administrative workflows within one cohesive environment.

  • Operational Feasibility - A solution that balanced functionality with realistic implementation resources and sustainable long term maintenance.

We ultimately selected a mobile development framework that enabled flexible iteration, seamless integration with learning systems, and an efficient path toward launching a focused MVP.

Design Approach

With the platform foundation established, the focus shifted to defining a clear and achievable path toward delivering value through an MVP. Rather than attempting to build a fully featured product from the outset, we adopted a phased roadmap approach that prioritized impact, usability, and operational clarity.

We identified three foundational pillars to anchor the initial release:

  • Community Engagement - Social feed, direct messaging, and group spaces to foster connection and interaction.

  • Integrated Learning Access - Seamless access to curriculum resources within the same ecosystem.

  • Administrative Workflow Support - Clear structures for managing events, communication, and content organization.

By narrowing the scope to these core capabilities, we reduced complexity while ensuring the MVP delivered meaningful value to both families and administrators.

Final Design

Grounded in stakeholder interviews, workflow analysis, and engagement mapping, the final community experience was shaped by one clear objective: reduce friction and centralize meaningful connection. Early insights revealed fragmented communication, inconsistent engagement, and heavy cross platform switching that weakened community momentum.

While the broader platform includes curriculum and administrative tools, our team focused specifically on designing the community layer. We approached it as an engagement system rather than a collection of features. Structure, hierarchy, and interaction patterns were intentionally crafted to support visibility, participation, and continuity across conversations, events, and shared resources.

The solution was delivered as a validation focused MVP, prioritizing navigation clarity and core engagement behaviors before full visual refinement. This ensured the foundation was strong before scaling.

The result is a streamlined, intuitive community interface that strengthens connection and integrates seamlessly within the larger TMV ecosystem.

Connect

Designed to encourage participation while minimizing cognitive load, the community feed leverages familiar interaction patterns and clear visual hierarchy to lower the barrier to engagement. Streamlined posting and messaging flows make it easy for members to stay informed and connected.

  • Dynamic social feed for updates and conversations

  • Direct messaging for personalized communication

  • Clear visual prioritization of announcements and posts

Engage

Group (Circle) spaces were structured to support focused discussions and shared interests within the larger community. Consistent navigation patterns ensure users can move seamlessly between feed and group interactions without confusion.

  • Dedicated group spaces for sub-communities

  • Structured discussion threads

  • Intuitive entry and exit points between groups and main feed

Gather

Events were designed to be discoverable and actionable, reducing friction around participation. Clear information hierarchy and streamlined RSVP interactions make it simple for members to stay informed and involved.

  • Event listing interface

  • Detailed event view with clear calls to action

  • Simplified RSVP flow

Impact & Outcomes

By prioritizing a focused MVP and evaluating the platform through a strategic lens, the team reduced projected development complexity while establishing a scalable mobile foundation. Narrowing scope to high impact features ensured meaningful value delivery without unnecessary overhead.

The resulting experience simplifies community engagement and event participation, aligning user needs with operational efficiency. Positioned for sustainable growth and future feature expansion, the platform provides The Melanin Village with a unified digital ecosystem built to scale alongside its expanding network.
